Pellegrini and West Ham wary of focusing too much on Salah

Manuel Pellegrini says West Ham will not use any specific tactics to try and stop Liverpool s Mohamed Salah on Sunday.

Salah enjoyed an outstanding debut season with the Reds last year, scoring 32 Premier League goals to claim the competition s Golden Boot, and is the obvious threat to West Ham at Anfield this weekend.

But Pellegrini does not believe it is as simple as attempting to deal with Salah, as he has team-mates of the quality of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and now also Xherdan Shaqiri, who has joined Liverpool from Stoke City.

We don t have any special plans just for him because it would be easier if Liverpool were just Mo Salah, but they aren t, he told a news conference. They have Firmino, Mane, Shaqiri.

“But Salah is a great player, an…

Woeful away days illuminate Manchester United´s puzzling timidity

Chelsea are seen as the new model for the benefits of youthful exuberance but it is Manchester United who have, on average, fielded the youngest starting XI in the Premier League this season.

It is United, too, who have not won a single competitive match away from home in over six months.

That despite a demand from David de Gea leading into an excursion south to right the wrongs of previous ventures outside Manchester and of last season s 3-1 loss at the London Stadium.

Instead, the venue became the scene of another miserable road defeat as West Ham earned a relatively routine 2-0 victory over the Red Devils on Sunday.

11 Man Utd have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 11 away matches in all competitions, their worst run since conceding …

Paterson sticking with relegated Burnley

Northern Ireland international striker Martin Paterson has signed a new three-year deal with Burnley, the Championship club confirmed on Friday.

The 23-year-old, who joined from Scunthorpe in 2008, agreed his extension the day after it was announced fellow forward Robbie Blake would be leaving the club who were relegated from the Premier League this season.

Paterson had two years remaining on his contract, but will now stay at Turf Moor until the summer of 2013.

Burnley boss Brian Laws said: It s absolutely marvellous to see the likes of Martin signing a new, improved contract.

We feel he is a major player and the fact he is extending his contract now shows he has ambition to help this club back into the Premier League.

It is a reward for the s…

Dutch plan to open World Cup campaign in style

The Netherlands open their World Cup campaign against Denmark on Monday determined to brush off their tag of group phase heroes, knock-out stage zeros.

The Oranje have never won the World Cup, but reached the finals of both the 1974 and 1978 tournaments playing their brand of flowing football.

Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk has an embarrassment of riches in his squad for the Group E clash at Soccer City with the likes of Arsenal s Robin van Persie, Real Madrid s Rafael van der Vaart and Inter Milan s Wesley Sneijder.

The challenge for this Dutch side is to secure a comfortable win over Denmark, breeze through the group stages, but then carry that early form into the knock-out stages.

In the group stages of Euro 2008, the Dutch saw off both 2006 World Cup f…

Flores struggles to accept City late show

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores rued a set-piece lapse as his team suffered a dramatic 2-1 Premier League defeat to Manchester City.

Following a draw at Chelsea and a last-gasp loss to Tottenham over the festive period, Watford seemed to set to return to winning ways at Vicarage Road after City full-back Aleksandar Kolarov headed Ben Watson s 55th-minute corner into his own net.

But Yaya Toure was allowed room to crash home an unstoppable volley from Kolarov s 82nd-minute corner and the hosts again found themselves on the receiving end of a late winner when Sergio Aguero guided home Bacary Sagna s wonderful cross two minutes later.

Despite showing understandable disappointment, Flores reserved praise for his players and Watson in particular  previously a t…

Norwich keen to keep hold of Redmond

Norwich City have slapped a £15m price tag on winger Nathan Redmond in an attempt to fend of potential suitors, .

The Canaries are also drawing up a new long-term contract for the twenty-one-year-old though he has is no rush to commit as he has eighteen months left to run on his current deal.

The England U21 international has made twenty appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring four goals while last month he passed a hundred outings for the club since signing from Birmingham City in the summer of 2013.

A number of Premier League outfits are interesting in securing a deal for Redmond, including Crystal Palace who would see him as the ideal replacement for Yannick Bolasie should he move away.

Norwich currently sit in fifteenth plac…

Kane aiming for England glory, not Messi and Ronaldo

Harry Kane would rather measure his worth in terms of achievements with England than against the lofty exploits of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Three Lions captain Kane will collect his World Cup Golden Boot ahead of Saturday s Nations League opener against Spain at Wembley after netting six times on a buoyant run to the semi-finals for Gareth Southgate s men.

The 25-year-old is already off and running with a pair of Premier League goals for Tottenham this season and, in 2017, outscored Messi and Ronaldo for club and country.

I think it s hard to compare myself with them two, he told a pre-match news conference. Those two have set a standard of football over the past 10 years that has been unbelievable.

Those are the heights we all want to reach…

Stats the way Jose – Mourinho defends Rashford record

After a week in which Marcus Rashford has scored for England against Spain and Switzerland, the spotlight has turned on his playing time at Manchester United.

Several pundits have suggested Rashford would be better off leaving Old Trafford amid claims United boss Jose Mourinho does not have complete faith in the 20-year-old.

Mourinho came out fighting in his pre-Watford news conference on Friday, though, highlighting the chances offered to the striker when compared to some of his Premier League peers.

Marcus Rashford is not [Liverpool s] Dominic Solanke, said Mourinho. He is not [Chelsea s] Ruben Loftus-Cheek, he is not [Everton s] Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

He is Marcus Rashford, a Manchester United player, with an incredible number of appearances and an i…

Lecce ready for tough challenge against Inter Milan – coach Roberto D’Aversa

Lecce coach Roberto D’Aversa will have his team ready to tackle their own Mission Impossible when they host Serie A leaders Inter Milan on Sunday.

The Nerazzurri have won all of their games so far in 2024 and head south with a nine-point advantage over second-placed Juventus, who have played a game more.

Lecce may have won just twice in 20 league matches as they battle to stay clear of the relegation scrap, but D’Aversa insisted they would aim to meet Inter head on at the Stadio Via del Mare.

Next stop: Lecce

“Inter are coming off nine consecutive victories, their statistics in 2024 are impressive, so it might seem impossible for us to get a result – but I believe nothing is impossible in football,” D’Aversa s…

Inter´s ´great desire´ got the job done against Sassuolo, says Inzaghi

Simone Inzaghi believes Inter demonstrated a great desire to win after Edin Dzeko s double secured a 2-1 victory over Sassuolo.

Inter, who beat Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday, got back to winning ways in Serie A after suffering back-to-back defeats, while they also ended a run of three successive away losses.

At the age of 36 years and 205 days, Dzeko passed the 100-goal mark in the Italian top flight, becoming the third-oldest player to do so after Goran Pandev (37y 268d) and Sergio Pellissier (37y 243d).

Inzaghi hailed the character shown by his players, telling DAZN in his post-match interview: We saw an Inter that had a lot of desire to win and this overcame physical and mental fatigue.

The team had a great desire to win, like Tuesday […
