Name Of The Year 2014: The Elite Eight

We're down to just eight splendid name-inees, and we're happy to see each one of them picking up their own fan groups. The comments section has provided a thorough analysis to complement our own, and we hope to see more nuggets of brilliance as we approach the Final Four. At this point, voters know everything they need to know about the remaining competitors, so I'll use this space to pull back the curtain and reveal how your NOTY sausage is made. This year, we started with more than 600 names culled from our Name of the Year email account. We were able to eliminate most of those names on first pass, since the majority of suggestions are too sophomoric, too hard to verify, or not quite wonderful enough. Our criteria take care of the rest of the pretenders. Any name pre…

data-mm-id=”_8z0837lb3″>It seems like only yesterday Kawhi Leonard brought the country of Canada its first Larry O'Brien Trophy. But it wasn't just yesterday, and much has changed; Leonard ended up in Los Angeles next to Paul George and across from LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook and James Harden are teammates, and the Sixers added Al Horford to build one of the biggest rosters in the NBA, to name just a few of the league's power shifts. Manchester United Should Sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

data-mm-id=”_174rakghw”>Manchester United just cannot catch a break.Once they were the kings of England, if not all of Europe, almost guaranteed to bring home at least one trophy every season. Nowadays they're that team – they hang around in the bottom half of the Premier League's top 10, just barely clinging to their God-given spot in whatever European competition they can get get into each year.None of the four managers that came into Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013 have come close to filling the old Scotsman's shoes. Since David Moyes flamed out, each one has gone through the same cycle – hailed as the second coming of Ferguson, gotten hot early in his tenure only to be criticized for his team's poor form and limp attacking style (w…

The Big Golf Match Went Over Way Better Than Chris Russo Predicted

data-mm-id=”_61udpx71o”>Chris Russo was not enamored with the idea of Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods playing golf — even for charity — when the idea arose in early April. He did what he does best in response, which is to launch into a prolonged and impassioned rant on the topic. Here is a truncated version of what the legendary radio voice had to say at the time. Here's a very edited version of an epic 12 minute rant on #TomBrady & #PeytonManning playing golf with Tiger & Phil. Worth a listen if you need a laugh! @MadDogUnleashed pic.twitter.com/v6vvagoeNL— Mad Dog Sports Radio (@MadDogRadio) April 3, 2020It seems like a small tragedy to chip away at a masterpiece like this, distilling 12 minutes down to 2 and change. Would a person crop out…

Richard Sherman is Pissed Off About Cam Newton's Contract

data-mm-id=”_4pwx1qzl4″>Cam Newton signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots on Sunday, thus ending a long free-agency saga for the former MVP. But while Newton's place as a starter in the NFL once again seems secured (no offense to Jarrett Stidham), his compensation isn't exactly what you'd expect for a player of Newton's caliber. According to Adam Schefter, Newton's deal is worth up to $7.5 million. It's incentive-laden, again according to Schefter, so if he has a great season, he'll be the 27th-highest paid QB in the NFL. Meanwhile, Newton's successor in Carolina, Teddy Bridgewater, who is still unproven coming off his knee injury, got a three-year, $63 million contract only a few months ago. That really didn't sit well with 49…
